News - demo player - overview here - 2004-10-30

Being fed up with the lack of any decent lightweight Windows demo player around, I've decided to write my own. It has support for Quake (NQ and QW), Q2, Q3, D3 and all their demo formats, including QuakeWorld's .qwz and .mvd. It can handle Q1 and Q2 demos from any mod and it also has decent support to cope with Q3 demos from various mods. Documentation can be found here and the complete package weighing just 180KB here. Just make sure to read the install steps.

I've ordered ADSL on June the 28th, received the modem kit on July the 9th, the line was released yesterday.

Just in time to witness today's Todd Hollenshead .plan update, stating Doom 3 has gone gold! Looking back at my first newspost on this site, it turns out my guess concerning when Doom 3 would go gold, wasn't far off ;). Time to finish my Shuttle PC by buying a graphics card and adequate ram.

Played Painkiller single player during April, was ok. Painkiller is a game designed by QuakeWorld enthusiasts, its fast paced multiplayer part should be a very good alternative for the Quake series. It's nice to see a company makes the multiplayer part like this with a steep learning curve, designed especially for hardcore FPS gamers. This in contrary to nowadays newbie friendly FPS games which are trying to satisfy both newbie's and hardcore players, failing to do so. Now let's hope the game will take off and receives long term support from the major international tournaments. I've played multiplayer at the last GamePoint HQ lan in April, was allot of fun. Haven't had a chance to try it online though, I don't have any internet, remember? :(

Q2 MVD, latest Q2PRO release by SkulleR: 0.12.
Looks promising, but it's still in alpha phase, rather unstable and there's no Linux build yet, unfortunately. There are some things that could have been done better in my opinion. Personally I don't like the way the author is trying to totally duplicate the Q3 user interface, for instance Q2's full console drop has been removed and the author is using upper case in cvar names. Q2PRO is still no way near QuakeWorld's QWExtended, MQWCL or FuhQuake standards, but it's by far the best custom Q2 client/server engine I've seen to date. Nice potential, good work.

Still waiting for Doom 3.

I'll probably order ADSL soon, don't know which provider yet.

News - mouse input handling overview for QW, Q2 and Q3 - article here - 2003-12-30

Planning to attend the QH-LAN #6 QuakeWorld lan near Stockholm in Sweden in January 2004, I treated myself to a new PC at Christmas 2003. Why a new PC for QuakeWorld, an Athlon 1400 with 512MB ram and a GF3 is fast enough for QW? Sure, of course it is. However since I will be traveling by plane, I have very little desire to pack my 295,- Euro aluminium Lian-Li computer case (+ contents) and have it handled as luggage in and out of the plane's cargo bay.

So, with the prospect of Doom 3 going gold in 2004, I've bought a Shuttle XPC SB65G2 equipped with a Pentium 4. At 300x200x185 mm and weighing 6.15 Kg with optional carrier bag, it's small and light enough to enter the plane as personal hand luggage. I'll put the contents of my previous PC in a new cheap computer case, sell it and keep the empty Lian-Li computer case for future use.

Since switching PC's always brings the hassle of transferring the mouse setup from one PC to another and get it to feel the same in game, I also decided it was time to switch from Windows 2000 to Windows XP. I did some testing on both systems with both 2K and XP for an evening (must love the Norton Ghost image tool) and noticed some interesting facts, so I wrote a long boring nerdy article and uploaded it from abom's place, here it is.

News - Quake2 MVD (Multi View Demo) support - 2003-12-30

At ClanBase Heaven 4, I was showing the QW MVD serverside record concept (coded by Highlander in QWExtended) to Griffon26, a Dutch Q2CTF player who coded BiteMe!, a Q2 proxy. I said there weren't any decent custom Q2 clients and servers out there, and this would be one of the prime features any serious Q2 engine should have. Apparently he got so fuzzed about it that he wanted to code the feature, so he started coding immediately after the lan.

After two weeks Griffon26 called me (he went in November without internet (switching ADSL ISP's) and I didn't have any internet at all anymore) to state he had basic serverside MVD recording and client viewing working. After that we had phone calls every three days or so to discuss progress and feature implementation overview.

When Griffon26 got internet from his new ISP begin December, he took note of a Russian guy named Andrey 'SkulleR' Nazarov, who published a working alpha win32 Q2 engine with MVD support on the NoCheat forum. Ironically enough, SkulleR had been busy coding his very own engine in the same time window as Griffon26 was coding his, nearly two years after id Software released the Q2 engine source code! From a Russian Q2 forum, it appears SkulleR used my enhanced Quake2 client/server engine wish list as a guide \o/.

SkulleR's engine was already at the phase where it had splitscreen MVD multiview support, as seen in Oppy's FuhQuake 0.28 modification and Q3 CPMA. Griffon26 told me SkulleR's MVD implementation was coded neatly as well. So considering SkulleR's enthusiasm towards the project, we decided to put our own engine on hold for a while, to see where SkulleR will take his.

To be continued...

News - bye bye... - 2003-11-03

I'll be offline from 4 November 2003 for an unknown period, busy with more important things in life. In the meantime however, I will try to work on my modular QW/Q2 configs and I will try to upload them somehow when ready. I'm also heading off for the following major lans soon:

Cya all _maybe_ again somewhere around the time Doom 3 goes gold. doei ;)
